Artist Statement and Resume
The desire to paint icons of nature has been with me for a very long
time. Having lived close to the river bosque in Albuquerque, and
walking the network of trails near the Rio Grande for many years,
this landscape has become my inspiration and source of creativity.
An interesting thing happens when you become connected to the land
in this way…the plants and animals begin to speak and you learn to
listen.
To
try and express this earth connection I’ve experimented with many
different media and formats but when I discovered egg tempera
painting in 2006 the inspiration finally had found a home. This
rich and wonderful medium lends itself to a love of detail and
intimacy with the subject. The fact that it is so completely
organic and ancient only makes it more fitting. Following the
tradition of the Northern Renaissance artists I finish the paintings
with oil glazes to create small jewel-like panels.
These small paintings are my attempt to give a voice to animal life
on this planet. In past cultures animals were revered and
respected. It’s my very simple desire to honor and respect them in
my art…and to listen to what they have to teach us.
